Commonly used medications for back pain

The most commonly used medications used for back pain are NSAIDS, which are anti-inflammatory drugs.

These include drugs such as Ibuprofen, Voltaren and even Valium, the latter being subscribed simply because it is an excellent muscle relaxant.

When someone is diagnosed with back pain, bursitis or any other inflammation related condition, Ibuprofen is usually a part of the medical prescription.

For inflammatory conditions or any other muscle pain or nerve pain NSAIDS are still considered to be the most effective treatment. But it comes wrapped with its very own set of adverse reactions and uncomfortable side effects. About which your GP never utters a word, except to use it according to prescription. What they don’t tell you is that a too high dose will undoubtedly cause gastro-intestinal disorders such as stomach ulcers, cramps and constipation.

Until recently, these dangerous pain medications were your only option if you wanted to experience relief from the pain. And corticosteroids usually became part of the package, because these horrible drugs are known to suppress the immune system.

Common cause of Back Pain

Intervertebral discs are the cartilage discs located between the vertebrae in the spinal cord of mammals. It is their purpose to absorb shock before it reaches the vertebrae, and to improve mobility of the spine.

But when these intervertebral discs become degenerated they can cause havoc for the sufferer. The degeneration of these discs is believed to be the number one cause of chronic back pain and neck pain.

And while around 25% of the population goes burdened by uncontested signs of IVD degeneration, there still is no sign of an effective treatment and/or therapy. Contributing factors such as oxygen deficiency, a lack of essential sugars and water, aging and inflammation of the painful region are considered to be the main causes of degeneration of the intervertebral discs.

It was reported by the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies that 100 million Americans have to live with chronic pain. And more specifically with chronic back pain. Medical researchers have been working endlessly to find a safer and more cost effective treatment than NSAIDS.

Studies on CBD for back pain

In March 2015, a link was discovered between Cannabinoids and their effect on chronic back pain and related conditions. After the study that led to this discovery, (Protective Effects of Cannabidiol on Lesion-Induced Intervertebral Disc Degeneration), patients suffering from an IVD related condition may be in luck.

CBD (Cannabidiol), the Cannabis compound that is so well known for the fact that it is completely non-psychoactive. And is particularly well suited to our bodies, and adapts very well within the environment of certain receptors within our bodies.

Three different quantities of CBD was tested on 19 rodents that were induced with an intentionally created condition. Similar to the IVD degeneration found in afflicted humans. An MRI scan was done on the 19 subjects. Results were of little to no consequence in the rodents tested with the two lower dosages. But the higher dosage helped reduce the damage in the particular individuals over the 15-day study period.

The study concluded that CBD (Cannabidiol) “revealed anti-degenerative effects” administered at high dosages. And that the tests “suggest that this compound could be useful in the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration”

CBD now begins to prove itself in studies within a vast span of domains related to the medical world. Its versatility is displayed in therapy and treatment for a great many diseases and conditions. Intervertebral disc degeneration has now been added to the ever increasing list of conditions that can be treated with Cannabidiol, placing chronic pain in the ever expanding list of ailments for which CBD has brought new hope.
